"The In-Between Bookstore" by Edward Underhill: Mini Review

The In-Between Bookstore by Edward Underhill is the heartwarming story of Darby, a trans man who returns to his small hometown looking for a fresh start. When he steps into a familiar bookstore from his childhood, he’s transported back in time and comes face-to-face with his teenage self. This encounter gives him the rare chance to reflect on his past, examine his choices, and decide what kind of future he wants. The story is sweet, introspective, and full of tender moments that explore identity, healing, and second chances.

Darby’s relationship with Michael, his old friend who becomes something more, was lovely to watch unfold. Their connection felt real and complex, adding a layer of romance that fit perfectly into the story. While the pacing was slower than I usually prefer, it worked for Darby’s thoughtful journey of self-discovery. My only small critique is that the stakes didn’t felt very high, but that didn’t take away from how much I enjoyed the book. The In-Between Bookstore is a slice-of-life story with a little bit of magic, and I’d recommend it to anyone who’s ever wondered what they’d say to their younger self.
